being back means seeing familiar things again

I left work early to go to Terre Haute and order some inserts so that I can see with my gas mask on. On the way back, gas was cheap, so a stop was made to fill the tank. Not long after getting home, I was out again, this time to Boulder Creek Dining Company in Brownsburg for the IndyPro meeting with Raffay as a passenger. Familiar but long-unseen faces were present, and I think most of us had a passably a good time. The lemonade sucks, but the ribs are so tender the meat literally falls off the bone. The Iotas present managed to outnumber the other chapters represented. People there I recognized were Chuck, Becker, Christy, Matt, Caryn, Erich, and Pete. A couple of other brothers were in attendance, but I don't know their names, sorry.

The unexpectedly interesting part was driving home. The windows were all rolled down leaving the restaurant, and all of a sudden a big cloud of dust came out of nowhere and blew through the car. Then a lot of dust and loose trash started swirling around in the air in little dust devils up and down the street. We rolled up the windows, and rain began to sprinkle down, so the radio was turned on and it announced a tornado warning for a severe thunnderstorm coming right at us. I didn't want to wait around for it to stop, so we just kept going.

The worst came around the time we got to 36. Rain was blowing everywhere, lightning was coming down on all sides, and the combination of lightning and power outages was making it very hard to tell where the road was as the sky alternated rapidly from light to darkness, killing night vision almost altogether. The things flying across the road kept getting bigger, too. I ended up just following the road reflectors they have along the center line to make sure I was in the right place. After about half an hour, it got a lot better, and normal speeds could be resumed safely, but that half hour was the second worst rainstorm I've ever tried to drive in.

Wow... that sounds like a bit of an adventure.

I got some pretty heave rain coming back to Iowa after my 4th of july visit home. Not nearly that bad, but I laughed at the people who slowed down the second it started raining. I only slow down when it gets bad enough that my visibility doesn't reach to my braking distance.

Jenn Ho:

Gas mask? You don't work at the same place as that one guy does, do you? Mike, I think? ChemE?

charles:

Indeed I do, but for a different company.

That one guy, Mike:

Yes, he works at the same facility as I... but my job is so much more better than his... I don't get locked inside a "maximum security prison"** for 12 hours at a time!

[**Editor's note: this quote taken from a news story. I don't actually work at a prison.]
