next week, no talking about cars

Until then, flagellate away at deceased equines.

The Honda CR-V and the Subaru Outback Wagon have eerily similar specs for looking so different on the outside. Not to mention one purports to be a 4WD SUV and the other an AWD car. If it weren't such a pain to try to stuff bookshelves and bicycles in cars when you want to take them somewhere, I'd just get an Accord. Who knows, maybe it is possible to fit such things in that car with relative ease. I think I found one, and it's only a short bus ride away. If this pans out today, it will be a great relief.

    Accord Pros
  • better mpg
  • lower costs
  • they have one in a color I like
  • the handling is something I'm used to
    Cons
  • less cargo room than Outback or CR-V
  • manual trim levels have fewer options available (i.e. heated seats, blah, blah)

    CR-V/Outback Pros
  • lots of cargo room ==> easy moving/shopping
  • Outback has better standard features and options
  • some off-road ability (as if I'll ever use it)
    Cons
  • more expensive to [buy | fuel | insure | plate]
  • probably too large to keep long-term anyway
  • not available in desired color (want to avoid white / generic silver)

On the other, other hand, the Accord is probably the most reliable of the three vehicles.

Just as a note, I have an 2005 Impreza wagon and have put 24,000 miles on it in the 9 months. It may be smaller than what you're looking for, but it handles great and the economy isn't bad - usually 28+mpg.

The AWD is useful getting out of winter parking places, but it may not be worth the money for most drivers. It really showed its value navigating churned mud in rain-soaked fields.

Also, on CRVs... my parents have a 2002 CRV. It's a comfortable, fun to drive vehicle. The two notable downsides were insane road-noise and poor rear visibility. Make sure that's fixed in the latest model.

Also:

My bike (front wheel on the side) fits in the back of the Impreza with the rear seats folded flat. The front passenger seat also folds flat - useful for packing full length folding tables.

And in agreement with Pederson, Accords are great cars. I'm just bitter that Honda killed the Civic wagon ;)

The price quote guy at the Honda dealership got back to me pretty quickly; I have yet to hear from the local Subaru dealer, but the one in Lafayette was prompt to reply.

Personally I don't like the heated seats. I don't know, it makes me feel like someone else has been sitting in my seat too long, and it just weirds me out. (My ex-boyfriend's car has seat warmers, and he'd accidentally turn them on when we were going somewhere and it totally weirded me out. Then again, it's an old car so maybe the newer seat warmers are better than that.)
