I've waited five years for this.

I am now the proud owner of a 2005 Honda Accord LX 5-speed. Next week Wednesday they are installing a roof-mounted bike rack on it.

Thanks for all the advice you've given me in the past week; it definitely helped. Now comes the really hard part about this new job: moving and informing all interested parties and creditors of my new address.

Edit: The photo shown above has been photoshopped to remove another car's antenna from the middle of the shot.

Don't forget the huge spoiler, loud "muffler", obnoxious paint scheme and spinner wheels (in shiny, shiny chrome, after all).

Anything less with a Honda would completely declasse.

charles:

*ahem* I said Honda Accord, not Honda Civic. Although wheel locks wouldn't be a bad idea, as little as they cost.

The funny thing is that Honda itself offers gold-plated emblems and chrome-tipped exhausts as options.

I know what you said.

Don't forget the Type-S decal, tinted windows, ground effects, and lime green (spray) paint job with chartreuse bumpers and trim.

(Seriously: I know, but I am pretty sure that, yes, I have seen such things. Well. Nearly. I haven't seen any late-model sedans with spinner wheels, but I am pretty sure I've seen a riced Accord or three)

charles:

It probably goes without saying, but those people apparently have no problem with voiding their warranties -- or looking really stupid and wasting money doing it. To each his own, but it's certainly not mine.

One of the nice things about a Honda Civic is that, if you should break it after five or ten years of abuse (serious abuse; Hondas seem to be built very well), you just crush the car against your forehead, throw it in the trashcan, and purchase a new one out of the vending machine.

Just in case it's not clear, I'm only giving you crap because I enjoy giving people crap :)

Congratulations on the Accord, drive it in good health, sir!

charles:

That would be one very large vending machine. $5 says it would have several labels on it warning you to not attempt tipping the manchine, as it will cause serious injury and death.

Sara:

congrats on the purchase charles I know you must be thrilled. And not a bad gas mileage car ;-)

Scott:

Congratulations on the Accord! I am fairly confident that will a roof rack you will have all the space you need. I know the things you mentioned hauling (bikes, bookshelves, etc... work great on mine. The one recommendation if you have space to store it, is to build a "tub" out of 1/4" plywood and 2x4's around the edges that's easy to mount on your rack. That way you can be less careful when strapping things down and can also carry stuff like rubbermaids and bankers boxes on top with a tarp.

Cheap simple thing to build with a hammer and nails (or better yet screws and gun), so you could even do it for a trip and then get rid of it afterwards. (I just priced it online at Home Depot at $25 + $10 tarp + free cord).
Just a thought.
